What's in a Name?

1 by Lynda O'Mara

This is my first post for this blog, so I thought I’d start with a little bit about myself, Lynda O’Mara, and my business, LOmara Creative Designs.

As a graphic designer, web developer and Internet Consultant, I started LOmara Designs in 2001 after I became a “dot com casualty”.  I had worked in the corporate world as a software trainer, technical writer, web developer, graphic designer and marketing communications.

When I started my business, I needed to come up with a name.  After much thought, gnashing of teeth, and trying to think of a clever name, I came up empty.  What to do for my name?  Something that would represent who I am.

Then one morning during my morning meditation, it came to me!  LOmara…and here’s why.

When I worked in the corporate world, I was always assigned a network drive to keep my documents.  Most companies use the first initial of your first name and your last name.  My directory was always LOMARA; L for Lynda and Omara for O’Mara (computer operating systems don’t like apostrophes very much).  So, every day I would be thinking “lomara’.  Then it came to me…why not use LOmara Designs for the name of my company!  That way people would be able to associate it to me, and I liked the sound of it.

What sealed the deal was that Wayne Dyer’s meditation from “In the Gap” uses sounds.  I learned that the sound of “Aw” is the sound of creation and the sound of “Om” is the sound of gratitude.  How “fortunate” that my last name contained both sounds.  So my company name became LOmara Designs, symbolizing creation and gratitude!  I felt this was the perfect name for me because it included elements of gratitude, creation and me!

LOmara DesignsSo, I created a logo using my favorite colors (I am a graphic designer, after all), and my business was born!

When I started making jewelry a few years later, I decided to stay with the same name, LOmara, and added Creative, making my business name for my jewelry, LOmara Creative Designs.  Again, gratitude and creation are the most important values in all that I do.

LOmara Creative DesignsI took the same logo, removed the computer mouse (which represented my computer expertise) and replaced it with a fun blinged-out figure wearing jewelry and changed the colors slightly.  And voila!, my jewelry business was born!

I’ve always liked the idea of naming jewelry pieces, but have named very few of my creations.  As I move forward, I would like to come up with names for my pieces, and especially for the jewelry lines that I will be creating.  It will be interesting to see where the inspiration for those names comes from!

The name has served me well for many years and I know that it will continue to do so as I move forward with my jewelry designs.  More about my jewelry design journey later….

Thank you!
